Patient Guide

Post-Treatment Aftercare

Proper aftercare is essential for optimal healing and long-lasting results. Follow these guidelines to ensure the best outcome from your dental treatment.

Immediate Aftercare (First 24-48 Hours)

Critical care instructions for the first two days after your procedure.

First 2-4 Hours

  • Bite on gauze for 30-60 minutes if bleeding
  • Don't eat until numbness wears off
  • Don't rinse your mouth
  • Don't touch the surgical area
  • Apply ice pack to face (20 min on, 20 min off)
  • Keep head elevated when resting

Avoid for 24-48 Hours

  • No smoking - critical for healing
  • No alcohol - interferes with healing
  • No straws - suction can dislodge clots
  • No spitting forcefully
  • No strenuous activity or exercise
  • No hot foods/drinks - wait until numbness gone

Managing Bleeding

Some bleeding and oozing is normal after dental surgery. Here's what to do:

  • Bite firmly on gauze for 30-60 minutes
  • Replace gauze when saturated
  • If bleeding persists, bite on a wet tea bag (tannic acid helps clotting)
  • Keep head elevated, even when sleeping
  • Avoid talking excessively
  • Light pink saliva is normal for 24-48 hours

Managing Swelling

Swelling is normal and usually peaks 48-72 hours after surgery.

  • Ice packs: Apply to face 20 min on, 20 min off for first 24-48 hours
  • Sleep elevated: Use extra pillows
  • After 48 hours: Switch to warm compresses if swelling persists

Don't be alarmed - some patients look worse on day 2-3 before improvement begins. This is completely normal.

Diet Recommendations

What to eat and avoid during your recovery period.

Recommended Foods

First 24-48 hours (liquids and very soft):

  • Smoothies (no straws!)
  • Yogurt
  • Lukewarm soups (blended)
  • Protein shakes

  • Mashed potatoes (cooled)

Days 3-7 (soft foods):

  • Scrambled eggs
  • Soft pasta

  • Hard or crunchy foods (nuts, chips, raw carrots)
  • Chewy foods (steak, tough bread)
  • Spicy foods
  • Very hot foods or drinks
  • Acidic foods (citrus, tomatoes)
  • Seeds (can get stuck in wounds)
  • Popcorn

For implant patients:

  • Avoid chewing on the implant side for 2-3 months
  • Gradually reintroduce harder foods as healing progresses

Proper hydration is essential for healing. Aim for 8+ glasses of water daily.
